Be prepared: Here’s where to find storm shelters in SWFL
FORT MYERS, Fla. — A necessary part of preparing for Hurricane Season is finding out where storm shelters are located and how to figure out which ones will be open during a weather event.
There are 20 storm shelters in Lee County, but not all of them will open for every storm. CLICK HERE to find out which storm shelters are open near you.
Collier County has designated 15 locations that will act as storm shelters when needed. CLICK HERE to find out where they are located. Similar to Lee County, not all shelters will open. People can call 239-252-8444 or 311 for the latest information.
Charlotte County officials are excavating a stormwater drainage swale in Charlotte Harbor ahead of Tropical Storm Elsa. If storm shelters are necessary, CLICK HERE to find out which shelters are nearest you and if they are open.
Hendry County officials said that their evacuation shelters should be a last resort. Homeowners outside of potential evacuation zones in safe homes built in 2002 or later with shutters should shelter in place at home with supplies, officials said.
Glades County provides a list of their approved storm shelters and how many people they can accommodate. Shelters may or may not be activated during an event due to various reasons, officials said.
