Cape Coral to discuss spending $1M to keep algae out of your canal

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Before toxic blue-green algae creeps into Cape Coral canals, city officials are discussing putting $1,000,000 towards water quality at a meeting on June 9.

Most of the million dollars being discussed at today’s meeting at 3 p.m. would go towards putting bubble curtains into several of the canals in Cape Coral.

Bubble curtains create a wall of air and ripples on the surface of the water that prevents anything floating from getting past it.

If approved, the bubble curtains would be put in four canals within the city. Currently, ten Cape Coral canals are considered to be a priority one zone.

Reactivating the curtain in the Mandolin Canal would cost around $23,000. Three additional curtains would cost up to $225,000. Placing a curtain in every canal in the priority one zone would cost close to $750,000.

Although the curtains sound expensive, Assistant Public Works Direcor Michael Ilczyszyn said it will be worth the investment to continue keeping algae out of canals.

“For us, spending a little bit of money up front should have some long term rewards on the back end,” he said. “It’s not just that we’re doing it for this year it’s also a preventative technology that can can be used into the future.”

If additional bubble curtains are approved, Ilczyszyn said it would take about six to eight weeks for systems to be built, shipping and deployed into the canals.
