Fire leaves Port Charlotte family without home, six cats dead

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. – A fire left a Port Charlotte family of five without a home Saturday morning.

Charlotte County Fire and EMS said the fire was reported in the 21000 block of Midway Boulevard between US 41 and Lakeview. Crews said the family evacuated the home before firefighters arrived on scene.

Firefighters said they were able to get the fire under control, but the fire did heavy damage to the home and things inside. One child was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Six of seven of the family’s cats died as a result of the fire and smoke, Charlotte County fire crews said.

The Red Cross is helping the family with lodging. The State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
