FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. – Former Fort Myers Beach Mayor Dan Hughes passed away Thursday evening.

Current Mayor Ray Murphy issued a statement on social media announcing the former mayor’s passing.

“It is with an extremely heavy heart that I have to announce that Mayor Dan Hughes passed away this evening at his home surrounded by his friends and family,” Murphy said.

Hughes was “instrumental” in the Town of Fort Myers Beach’s formation in 1995. Town officials said he served as mayor, a council member, and various other leadership roles on committees.

During the Town Council meeting on June 7, Hughes was recognized for his leadership on Fort Myers Beach.
