Man arrested for shooting into Cape Coral home on Fourth of July

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – A Georgia man was arrested Sunday accused of firing multiple shots in a Cape Coral neighborhood.

Corey Mattis, 21, is accused of shooting multiple firearms including rifles, shotguns, and handguns while Fourth of July fireworks and celebrations were happening Sunday, according to the Cape Coral Police Department.

Around 10:40 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting into a home on the 2500 block of SE 9th Place in Cape Coral.

A woman told police she was outside with her family watching fireworks when she heard what sounded like gunshots, according to the arrest report.

When she went back into her home about an hour later she found one of her bedroom windows had a hole in it and a projectile on the floor, police said.

Officers discovered a nearby home that was being used as a vacation rental with multiple visible firearms in the open garage.

The group inside told police they were renting the home for a week, investigators said.

Detectives searched the area and found multiple spent casings from rifles, shotguns, and handguns in the field around the home.

Another nearby home was also found with gunshot damage to a fence.

Mattis is facing charges of shooting into a dwelling and improper exhibition of a firearm.

He was taken to the Lee County Jail.
