Man caught illegally catching out-of-season fish in Naples

NAPLES, Fla.– Juan Jose Bustos was arrested for illegally catching and harvesting undersized and out-of-season fish on Thursday afternoon.

Florida Wildlife Commission Officers say Bustos was fishing off Naples Cay. They found four Snook in a cooler and an undersized Sheepshead.

It is currently illegal to fish snook across Southwest Florida as far south has Gordon’s Pass until May 31, 2022 due to Red Tide.

Bustos was using a cast net to fish snook which is also illegal.

Captain Perry Bedell, On a Mission Fishing Charters, says most fisherman only use cast nets to catch bait fish. He advises it’s important to do your homework before picking up a rod.

“Ignorance is never an excuse,” Captain Perry said. “We have a world class fishery right here in our backyard and we have to take care of it.”

Bustos also gave deputies the wrong name. He is facing several charges.
