MATLACHA, Fla. — Gobs of mat algae that used to stink up canals in Matlacha is starting to subside, but residents claim they’re still feeling its effects.

Some residents mentioned symptoms of brain fog, respiratory problems, and lethargy even though it has been several weeks after the bloom’s peak in the canals.

“I think it’s a little bit better now, I feel safe walking my dogs but still there’s an odor in the air and I know that it’s not completely gone yet,” Keith Nunnink, a Matlacha resident, said. “As recently as yesterday I had brain fog still, it kind of comes and goes.”

Lee County officials said they are continuing to monitor the algae situation in Matlacha.
