SWFL school closures & more ahead of Tropical Storm Elsa

SOUTHWEST, Fla.- School Districts in Southwest Florida are making decisions as Tropical Storm Elsa nears the area. Below is a list of the school decisions.

LEE COUNTY

The School District of Lee County announced Monday that all school campuses will be closed to students on Tuesday, July 6 due to potential impacts from Tropical Storm Elsa.

This includes:

  • Elementary Face to Face Summer School classes will be cancelled.
  • Elementary Virtual School classes will be in session.
  • Middle and High School Face to Face Summer School classes will be taught virtually. We ask that middle and high school students log onto their Google Classrooms, and check their email for directions from their teachers on how to access their classes virtually.
  • Middle and High School Virtual School classes will be in session.
  • Support our Students (SOS) classes will be cancelled.
  • Summer camps hosted at school sites are cancelled.
  • All athletic conditioning for students is cancelled.

The SDLC will make further announcements for Wednesday, July 7 as officials continue to monitor the storm.

COLLIER COUNTY

Collier County Public Schools said CCPS Summer School, regularly scheduled activities, and work at the school and district sites will continue as planned on July 6.

CCPS added the current forecast will allow for the safe operation of school busses.

CHARLOTTE COUNTY

Charlotte County Public School District announced that all student activities are canceled for Tuesday, July 6, and Charlotte County School Employees should not report to work as well on that day.

This cancellation includes:

  • Summer School classes
  • Charlotte Harbor School activities
  • Baker Center activities
  • Any camps held at school sites

Officials said they will be continuing to monitor the storm and will make a decision for Wednesday, July 7 at a later time.

*Camp Mackle & Camp Stellar in Marco Island will also be closed Tuesday due to current weather conditions.

DESOTO COUNTY

The School District of DeSoto County, including all schools and offices, will be closed Tuesday, July 6 due to potential impacts from Tropical Storm Elsa.

The District will announce plans for Wednesday, July 7 as decisions are made.

GLADES COUNTY

Glade County Schools said no closures are planned at this time but continue to monitor the storm’s intensity and path.

HENDRY COUNTY

The Hendry County School district has not yet made announcements whether potential storm impacts will affect school activities.

ADDITIONAL CLOSURES

The Florida Forest Service announced all campgrounds and recreation areas on State Forests in the path of Tropical Storm Elsa are closed.
