The Fort Myers Beach Fire Department said over the last few months, the chief has discussed potential resigning with the Board of Fire Commissioners. Tropical Storm Elsa isn’t slated to make landfall here, but will likely bring tropical storm conditions to the coastline. “The restaurant will be closed tomorrow,” said Andres Wirdma of the Sunset Beach Tropical Grill. The Town of Fort Myers Beach is helping residents prepare as Tropical Storm Elsa inches closer. A Town spokesperson said there were about 100 pre-filled sandbags available for residents to take. They’re located behind Town Hall located at 2525 Estero Boulevard. Once the sandbags are gone, residents can bring their own bags to fill from a sand pile. Current Mayor Ray Murphy issued a statement on social media announcing the former mayor’s passing. “It is with an extremely heavy heart that I have to announce that Mayor Dan Hughes passed away this evening at his home surrounded by his friends and family,” Murphy said.
