COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — Marco Island police are cracking down on crime by installing license plate readers.
The new crime prevention system is being used to enhance community safety, according to Marco Island Police.
Marco Island is an ideal place for the scanners because drivers can only access the city through three bridges — Jolley, Minozzi and Gober.
MIPD officials said that 70 percent of crimes involve a vehicle.
The devices also count vehicles, so the system will be useful for planning during big events and hurricane evacuations.
