State to close Piney Point after phosphate mine leak

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. – The state is going to shut down Piney Point after the phosphate mine leaked last week, Gov. DeSantis announced at a news conference on Tuesday. “We want this to be the last chapter of the Piney Point story,” DeSantis said. DeSantis announced that he is redirecting $15.4 million from existing appropriations at DEP to be used for technologies to pretreat water at the site for nutrients. In the event that more discharges are needed as the plant shuts down, pretreating the water would help reduce harmful algal blooms and fish kills, he said. He further...

Could there be a water disaster like Piney Point in SWFL?

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. —After watching the developments in Piney Point over the last few days, some said they’re worried about a similar emergency happening here in Southwest Florida. Environmental advocates say it’s only a matter of time if the area gets a phosphate mine. A few years ago Mosaic Fertilizer pushed to re-zone and expand their phosphate mine in DeSoto County. Commissioners blocked the plan and told the company to file again in 2023. Environmental advocates are asking federal officials to step in and take a closer look at all of Florida’s mines to prevent future water crises before...

Manatee County officials monitor second area of intrusion at Piney Point pond

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. – Overnight drones located a second area of intrusion at the waste water pond in Piney Point, officials announced on Monday. The second intrusion could be the sign of a looming second breach. Teams of engineers are assessing the area, although seepage rates remained steady overnight, Manatee County Public Safety Director Jacob Saur said. Twenty additional pumps should be online by the end of Monday to help mitigate the damage. News of the second intrusion comes just a few days after the first breach was announced. On March 25, a phosphogypsum stack at Eastport Terminal...

Florida works to avoid “catastrophic” pond collapse

PALMETTO, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Sunday that crews are working to prevent the collapse of a large wastewater pond in the Tampa Bay area while evacuating the area to avoid a “catastrophic flood.” Manatee County officials say the latest models show that a breach at the old phosphate plant reservoir has the potential to gush out 340 million gallons of water in a matter of minutes, risking a 20-foot-high (about 6.1-meter-high) wall of water. “What we are looking at now is trying to prevent and respond to, if need be, a real catastrophic flood situation,” DeSantis said at a press...
