Some Fort Myers Beach businesses close in preparation for Tropical Storm Elsa

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla.– As doors close on Monday on Fort Myers Beach, many of the beachfront businesses won’t open for customers on Tuesday.  Tropical Storm Elsa isn’t slated to make landfall here, but will likely bring tropical storm conditions to the coastline.  “The restaurant will be closed tomorrow,” said Andres Wirdma of the Sunset Beach Tropical Grill.  Many of those businesses closed up shop early on Monday in preparation for the storm.  Work was well underway at the Sunset Grill.  “We have a checklist that we have to go through,” said Wirsma.  They’ve...

Sanibel officials prepare for potential impacts from Tropical Storm Elsa

SANIBEL, Fla. – City and County officials are bracing the Sanibel Captiva Road area ahead of Tropical Storm Elsa, an area deemed a “Critical Erosion Area” by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Strong winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surge are some effects of a major storm that residents on the islands are used to. With that also comes erosion. “We definitely have a lot less beach now than what we did ten years ago,” part-time resident Jen Shaver said. Visitors like Susan and Greg Shepard notice it too. “We love this place. It just calls us...

Tropical Storm Elsa could worsen the blue-green algae situation in SWFL

New pictures taken over Lake Okeechobee show huge swaths of blue-green algae. The photos are a grim reminder that BGA is still present in Lake O and Tropical Storm Elsa could make things worse.  “Our pilot flew the lake yesterday and there was about a 12 mile stretch of the lake where it was concentrated for sure,” John Cassani, from the Calusa Waterkeeper, said. On Monday, it was a windy, gloomy day at the Franklin Lock, hinting at the storm just beyond the horizon. “More runoff means more nutrient pollution, for the receiving waters, and that’s what fuels the blooms,”...

How a snowman can help you visualize the impacts of wind shear on Tropical Storm Elsa

Wind shear has been a big influence on the evolution of Tropical Storm Elsa over the last day, and a big reason why it was able to weaken from a hurricane back to a tropical storm earlier this weekend.    Something to keep in mind during storm season is that the strongest tropical storms and hurricanes that can develop are often well-organized vertically. By this, we mean that the center of circulation in the low levels of the atmosphere lines up fairly closely with the center of circulation in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere. When storms organize and align vertically they can become...
