Some Fort Myers Beach businesses close in preparation for Tropical Storm Elsa

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla.– As doors close on Monday on Fort Myers Beach, many of the beachfront businesses won’t open for customers on Tuesday.  Tropical Storm Elsa isn’t slated to make landfall here, but will likely bring tropical storm conditions to the coastline.  “The restaurant will be closed tomorrow,” said Andres Wirdma of the Sunset Beach Tropical Grill.  Many of those businesses closed up shop early on Monday in preparation for the storm.  Work was well underway at the Sunset Grill.  “We have a checklist that we have to go through,” said Wirsma.  They’ve...

Sanibel officials prepare for potential impacts from Tropical Storm Elsa

SANIBEL, Fla. – City and County officials are bracing the Sanibel Captiva Road area ahead of Tropical Storm Elsa, an area deemed a “Critical Erosion Area” by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Strong winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surge are some effects of a major storm that residents on the islands are used to. With that also comes erosion. “We definitely have a lot less beach now than what we did ten years ago,” part-time resident Jen Shaver said. Visitors like Susan and Greg Shepard notice it too. “We love this place. It just calls us...

Severe Weather Forecast: Stormy outlook as Elsa nears Florida

The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Team has issued a Severe Weather First Alert as Elsa inches closer to Florida. Though Southwest Florida starts off dry throughout the morning, conditions will begin to deteriorate overnight as Tropical Storm Elsa nears the region. Expect a stormy afternoon with a few rounds of heavy rain, gusty winds and frequent lightning. Rainfall totals and wind outlooks from Elsa are still very track-dependent as the system still has to interact with Cuba and warm water temperatures today. The system is expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and an isolated tornado...

How a snowman can help you visualize the impacts of wind shear on Tropical Storm Elsa

Wind shear has been a big influence on the evolution of Tropical Storm Elsa over the last day, and a big reason why it was able to weaken from a hurricane back to a tropical storm earlier this weekend.    Something to keep in mind during storm season is that the strongest tropical storms and hurricanes that can develop are often well-organized vertically. By this, we mean that the center of circulation in the low levels of the atmosphere lines up fairly closely with the center of circulation in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere. When storms organize and align vertically they can become...

Forecast: Hot and humid with stray showers

Favorable conditions for the Fourth of July with only a few morning coastal showers. If you’re heading to parades this morning, pack the sunscreen and the extra water. Highs today will climb into the low 90s with plenty of sunshine around. Feels like temperatures will reach the triple digits and rain chances will be hard to come by along the beaches. Inland areas will have a better chance at isolated showers and storms. Calm winds should keep boating conditions pleasant on the water. For fireworks tonight, most of Southwest Florida will be dry with only stary showers, mainly...

Forecast: Stray shower chances with warm temperatures

A few coastal showers are possible this morning but most will experience a dry start. Rain chances will be hard to come by today with only stray showers or thunderstorms mainly focused inland into the afternoon due to onshore winds. Highs will reach the upper 80s for most of the region with plenty of sunshine around today.  A fairly dry outlook is expected for the Fourth of July with the best rain chances targeting inland spots. Highs will creep back into the low 90s as well with calm winds around.  Hurricane Elsa will bring heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous surf to the Caribbean...

Demonstrating why a hurricane’s forward speed matters

The rapid forward speed of Hurricane Elsa the past several days has been a noticeable statistic anyone following the storm’s movement has surely noticed.  In the last two days, Elsa’s been racing across the ocean anywhere from 25 to 30 mph.   When we talk about forward speed, we’re looking at how fast the entire storm system is moving across the map.  We’re not talking about the winds around the storm, as they’re much faster (gusting up to 86 mph in Barbados on Friday morning for example). So when looking at just the forward...

Forecast: Isolated rain today with all eyes on Elsa

Those in Southwest Florida will continue watching Tropical Storm Elsa today as the system impacts the Lesser Antilles through this afternoon. Our entire area continues to be inside the forecast cone from the National Hurricane Center with any potential local impacts arriving next week, specifically around Tuesday. It’s important to point out a lot of uncertainty still exists with the long-range track and intensity of this storm because of potential land interaction with Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti and Dominican Republic this weekend. A lot will change over the next 48 hours as we see...

Forecast: Another unsettled afternoon

Though conditions start off fairly quiet, rounds of rain are expected again into the afternoon. Scattered coverage will be found into the late afternoon and early evening hours with isolated strong storms possible. Highs will be limited again with many areas only reaching the upper 80s.  Heading into the holiday weekend, winds will shift onshore allowing for a much drier coastal outlook for Saturday and Sunday. Inland areas will still experience isolated showers and storms each afternoon. Highs will bounce back into the low to mid 90s.  Beyond that, all eyes are on Tropical...
